These 7 Words Made Me Buy a Dog Collar-And I Don't Own a Dog

The following story proves that no matter how talented you are, no matter how great your product is, you still need good copy to sell it.

A few months ago I went to an outdoor art market. My husband and I were browsing the displays as we strolled down the street. Then I saw dog collar shop. In front of it was an A-Frame sign. It read: "Life's Short Spoil Your Dog."I didn't think much of it as I don't own a dog and just kept walking.

Anyways eventually my husband and I reached the end of the displays. Not seeing anything I wanted to buy, we decided to walk back to the car. We had to pass by that dog collar display again. However, this time I could see the other side of the A-Frame sign. It was just 7 simple words but as I read it, my face brightened and I laughed out loud. It read, "We take credit cards-especially your husbands."

This time as I walked by, I made eye contact with shop owner. She smiled at me and my heart warmed. I decided to double back and buy from her.

I don't own a dog but I remembered my friend had just bought a cat. So I asked the shop owner if her dog collars can be used for cats. She enthusiastically said yes. We chatted a bit and I told her that it was her sign that made me want to buy. She nodded and replied that a lot of people get a kick out of it.

It was this scenario among many others that made me want to focus on writing more. Words have the power to completely transform the way you think and feel.

If it wasn't for that cleverly worded sign I may not have ever made a purchase. So the next time you're struggling with selling your product or services try to work on the message. A bit of wit and humor always wins but if you don't have a funny bone, a good story can also do wonders.

People love a good story. Much like the one I just told. So try to incorporate storytelling whenever you market your business. This includes social media posts, ads, the About Page on your website, etc.

No one wants to be sold to but we love to feel inspired.
